Behind the Playlist

Have you ever revisited a playlist you made years ago?

Not the one you recently made for running or driving.
I mean those playlists from two, three, maybe five years ago – with random names like “Late night vibes,” “Recently liked,” or “Feeling down.”

You tap on it.
The first song starts playing.

Then you freeze.

🎵 That winter

That song takes you back to that winter.
You took the same subway every day. The sky was always grey.
You listened to that song on repeat, over a hundred times.
Back then you were waiting for an answer – or waiting for someone.

🚌 That road trip

The second song brings back a road trip to a certain city.
You remember the seat number on the bus, the mountains outside the window, even the strange snack the stranger next to you was eating.
That trip didn’t change anything dramatically – but when you came back, you were not quite the same person who left.

🌤️ That forgotten afternoon

The third song – you have no memory of why you added it.
But as the melody starts, a hazy afternoon suddenly becomes sharp again:
the angle of the sunlight, the smell in the air, even the temperature of the coffee in your hand.

You see, a playlist is never just a playlist.

Now, when you scroll through social media, you see countless people sharing their playlists.
Some list their entire “Top 100 of the Year.”
Others share just three songs with a caption: “This is what’s keeping me alive lately.”

Every share is a small wave –
“Look, this is me. This is how I’ve been lately.”

💬 Why we share playlists

Because some things are hard to say out loud, so we hide them in song titles.
Some emotions are hard to express, so we let the melody speak.
Some moments are too private to tell everyone – but we can post a song, and those who understand, will understand.

So next time you see someone share a playlist, don’t just see a list of titles.

It might be an unsigned confession.
It might be the soundtrack of a lonely night on a balcony.
It might be the voice of someone telling themselves “just one more step” while running.
Or it could simply be a gentle whisper: “Hey, I’m still here.”

Every playlist tells a story.
And every story is waiting for someone willing to listen.
