Why I Gave My Kid an Android MP3 Player Instead of a Smartphone

To be honest, my kid had been asking for “something to listen to music” for months.

I knew exactly what she meant — a smartphone. Half her class already had one.

But I didn't want to go there.

Not because I don't trust her. It's just that a phone comes with way too much extra stuff.

Games, social media, late-night notifications, random group chats…

She just wanted music. I just wanted her to have music.

Then someone told me about an Android MP3 player.

I'll be honest — I was confused. An MP3 player that runs Spotify?

Turns out, yes. It's basically an Android device — without the phone part.

After trying it for a while, I really like it. Here's why.

1. None of the crap

The most annoying thing about a phone isn't the hardware — it's the endless notifications.

Game invites, like reminders, someone posted a new video…

She just wanted to listen to music — and half an hour later he's scrolling through short videos.
