Spotify Kids + Parental Locks: The Perfect Combo for Safe Listening
Share
My kid started getting into music around age six.
He’d scroll through my phone, open Spotify, and stare at album covers. Sometimes he’d accidentally tap into a playlist that wasn’t really meant for kids — you know how those “Top Hits” playlists can be.
I wanted him to listen to music. But I didn’t want to sit next to him every second, playing content police.
Then I found a combo that works surprisingly well: Spotify Kids + the built-in parental locks on the device itself.
What is Spotify Kids?
Simply put, Spotify Kids is a separate app Spotify made for children aged 3 to 12. It has a colorful interface, big buttons, and only contains hand-picked songs, stories, and audiobooks.
No swearing, no adult content, no weird recommendations.
You can choose by age group (“younger” or “older”), or build your own playlists. Kids just tap and listen — no chance of wandering into inappropriate stuff.
Honestly, this app alone solves most of the problem.

But an app alone isn’t enough
Kids are curious. You know that.
Even with Spotify Kids installed, they’ll still be tempted to poke around the home screen. If Google Play is on the device, they might try to download YouTube or some random game. Next thing you know, they’re watching someone play Minecraft instead of listening to music.
So a “good app” isn’t enough. You need to close the other doors too.
That’s where parental locks come in
The Globluum player I use runs Android 14, but its built-in parental controls are no joke.
I can:
- Disable Google Play — so he can’t download anything new
- Disable Factory Reset — so he can’t wipe all my settings in one tap
- Hide the App Management menu — so he doesn’t even know where to re-enable disabled apps
Then I leave him only Spotify Kids and a couple of other apps I approve (like audiobooks).
He thinks the player only comes with those few apps.
Meanwhile, I quietly sit in the back as the “admin.”

A real-life example
Last week, some friends came over with their kids. A group of five- and six-year-olds gathered around the player, picking songs, singing along, and dancing. They had a blast — and I didn’t have to watch the screen at all.
None of them tried to “see what else is on here.” Because every time they tapped around, all they saw was that big colorful Spotify Kids interface.
That’s exactly what I wanted: they enjoy the music, I enjoy the peace of mind.
Final thoughts
If your kid loves music, you probably don’t want to spend your days saying “don’t tap that” or “this one’s not for you.” That’s exhausting.
Try this combo instead:
Spotify Kids + an Android player with parental locks
One takes care of content safety. The other takes care of operational boundaries.
You might find that letting your child listen to music can actually be — pretty stress-free.
